Celebrate President Rutherford B. Hayes’ 199th birthday by attending a wreath-laying by members of the U.S. military on Sunday, Oct. 3, at Hayes’ tomb at Spiegel Grove. The ceremony is at 1 p.m. at Hayes’ grave, located at the Hayes estate and grounds of the Hayes Presidential Library & Museums, called Spiegel Grove. Admission is free. Each year, the sitting U.S. president sends military members to lay a wreath at Hayes’ tomb on the Sunday closest to his birthday. His birthday is Oct. 4. Costumed living history presenters will portray First Lady Jane Pierce; Hayes Home housekeeper Sarah Jane Grant; Gen. William Tecumseh Sherman; President Rutherford B.
