Celebrate President Rutherford B. Hayes’ 199th birthday by attending a wreath-laying by members of the U.S. military on Sunday, Oct. 3, at Hayes’ tomb at Spiegel Grove.
The ceremony is at 1 p.m. at Hayes’ grave, located at the Hayes estate and grounds of the Hayes Presidential Library & Museums, called Spiegel Grove. Admission is free.
Each year, the sitting U.S. president sends military members to lay a wreath at Hayes’ tomb on the Sunday closest to his birthday. His birthday is Oct. 4.
These representatives, as well as Hayes Presidential Executive Director Christie Weininger, will give brief remarks. A bugler will play “Taps,” and a color guard will ceremonially fire rifles.
Hayes served in the Union Army during the Civil War and rose to the rank of general.
This event is also part of the American Presidents Film & Literary Festival, which takes place Sept. 25 and Oct. 1-3 at The Strand Concert Theater, Birchard Public Library, Fremont Ross High School and Hayes Presidential.
Hayes Presidential is America’s first presidential library and the forerunner of the federal presidential library system. It is partially funded by the state of Ohio and affiliated with the Ohio History Connection. Hayes Presidential is located at Spiegel Grove at the corner of Hayes and Buckland avenues.
