FREMONT – A documentary that examines those working to bring Americans together during a time of major political division and polarization won multiple awards on Saturday, Oct. 2, at the American Presidents Film & Literary Festival. “The Reunited States,” directed by Ben Rekhi, won Best Production and Best Feature Film awards. This film takes an in-depth look at a growing movement of people who recognize that political polarization has cut through every aspect of American society in recent years and threatens American democracy. Celebrate President Hayes’ birthday with military ceremony, bugler at Spiegel Grove
Celebrate President Rutherford B. Hayes’ 199th birthday by attending a wreath-laying by members of the U.S. military on Sunday, Oct. 3, at Hayes’ tomb at Spiegel Grove. The ceremony is at 1 p.m. at Hayes’ grave, located at the Hayes estate and grounds of the Hayes Presidential Library & Museums, called Spiegel Grove. Admission is free. Each year, the sitting U.S. president sends military members to lay a wreath at Hayes’ tomb on the Sunday closest to his birthday. His birthday is Oct. 4. These representatives, as well as Hayes Presidential Executive Director Christie Weininger, will give brief remarks. A bugler will play “Taps,” and a color guard will ceremonially fire rifles. Walk the grounds of the Hayes Presidential Library & Museums by lantern light and “meet” people connected to U.S. presidents throughout history during night-time tours on Friday, Oct. 1. Costumed living history presenters will portray First Lady Jane Pierce; Hayes Home housekeeper Sarah Jane Grant; Gen. William Tecumseh Sherman; President Rutherford B. Hayes’ cousin, Lucy Elliot Keeler; and Alice Roosevelt, daughter of President Teddy Roosevelt. They will be stationed around Spiegel Grove, the grounds of Hayes Presidential, and share their stories. Ulysses Grant and Sen. Robert Kennedy at lantern tours of Spiegel Grove on Friday, Oct. 5, during the inaugural American Presidents Film & Literary Festival. Tours begin at 9 p.m. with the last tour leaving at 10:20 p.m. Each tour is about 45 minutes. Guides carrying lanterns lead the groups around Spiegel Grove, the grounds of the Hayes Presidential Library & Museums. Community partners planning first American Presidents Film & Literary Festival for Oct. 4-7 FREMONT – The first ever film and literary festival to focus on the American Presidency will take place Oct. 4-7 in Fremont, home of America’s first presidential library. The American Presidents Film & Literary Festival will focus on issues related to the American Presidency. The literary component will include talks by featured authors and essay and poetry contests. Several community partners, including the Liberty and Learning Foundation, Birchard Public Library, Fremont City Schools and the Rutherford B. Create and submit a film to the American Presidents Film & Literary Festival FREMONT – What does the American Presidency mean to you? The issues? History? Something entirely original and different? Create and submit a film about the presidency that fits the theme “People, Places, Politics, Power” to the American Presidents Film and Literary Festival taking place Oct. 4-7, 2018, in Fremont, Ohio. Submissions are open to all filmmakers, including emerging and seasoned. Submissions can be made at the Film Freeway at www.filmfreeway.com/AmericanPresidentsFilmandLiteraryFestival. The regular submission deadline is April 6 with a $20 submission fee. The late submission deadline is June 1 with a $30 submission fee. Film Festival writing contest for essays, poetry includes cash prizes FREMONT – Calling all writers! The American Presidents Film & Literary Festival is taking entries for its writing contest Cash prizes will be awarded to three age groups in essay and poetry categories. Entries will be published on the film festival’s website and could be included in the festival program. Entries must be submitted as an email attachment to writingcontest@birchard.org. Students in the Fremont City School District may submit entries created for class assignments through their teachers. The deadline is 11:59 p.m. Sept. 1. The topic of the poetry contest is U.S. Presidents and the Presidency. Poems may be about a single president, more than one president or the U.S. presidency in general.
